Will cars be ruined in the future? Will you still buy a new car after speed limiters are introduced in 2022? Let us know!

    • PGT

@ben elliott Not really. Suzie's gotta take her kids to school somehow, and that beater's just gonna cost more and more to fix. Besides the safety features mean that if a dickhead in his lowered 240SX crashes into her she's less likely to die and the dickhead will end up with his face all over the pavement.

@Ryan Lee How is that an issue? Teslas are badass and I can't wait to see what the Mainstream manufacturers put out as far as electrics go.

Dude, we're going to have to grow a set and stand up against the demons that are sending the world to hell in a handbasket. Castrated cars, castrated people, suffocated people by masks, I mean when the fuck are people going to wake the fuck up and push back (with heart and diesel power) against the devils that are trying to take over the earth plane? It's about time we send them back into the hell realm they came from and live fucking happy lives... I mean, this goes past motoring... this is a spiritual war... have you got spiritual balls for this revolution? I'm going to put a fucking g-string (one with a crack) on my face and walk through my fucking city... the fucking zombies out there need to see this, maybe they'll wake the fuck up and say: what the fuck am I doing with a fucking mask on my fucking face that's fucking depriving me of fucking O2 and filling me of my own CO2? Never mind a fucking coronavirus, that's fucking fiction 🙄 take it from a guy that's not worn a mask fucking once and that is fucking healthy as a fucking bull... and I'm not 20 either... so yeah, fuck the new world order with their dicates... it's time to take back our creative power, we are fucking geniuses... everybody's got his own bliss to bring to this place... let's kick these fucking demons out and fucking shine sister and brothers! 💕

Eh, To be honest here, the bulk of people aren't enthusiasts. Now that I think about it, all these things aren't bad things. - Hard speed limits prevent you from speeding tickets (more money for car parts!) - Particulate filters help to stop the polar bears from dying and keep the air clean (seriously go to a place like Vietnam, India or China where the air is dirty and you'll thank your catalytic converter for existing, there's a lot of motorcycles in those places and diesel trucks with no DPFs or cats) - Heavier cars are smoother to drive when you're doing actual car shit (like commuting) - Safety improvements mean you're less likely to die in a crash (Seriously) - Electronic handbrakes are better for packaging (and you could always fit a rear line-lock handbrake if you wanna be a drift kiddie) - Emissions regs push engineers to build more efficient engines which have the potential to make better power when de-restricted (turbo cars were built precisely because of sporting and regulatory restrictions on engine displacement and yet we somehow adore them.) I mean let's be honest here. How many of us are _actually_ driving in the street like we're Paul Walker. To the bulk of commuters these laws are a godsend. It'll push manufacturers to build better hybrids and more EVs, which drives down their costs. Since most europeans live in apartments in cities you can't exactly own an EV there, so if you can make Hybrids more accessible you can stretch the finite supply of fuel out for longer. I mean i'll be a petrolhead till I die, but man these laws aren't going to make cars boring. The truth is that 99% of cars have sucked and always did suck from an enthusiast standpoint. The bulk of people see a car as a tool to get from place to place, and for them, this is better. We'll always find workarounds and unlock the potential of modern vehicles as time goes by.

The amount of engineering required to make a car fun, good looking and compliant with all these rules means anything even vaguely desirable costs a fortune. It's why I ride bikes now. Yeah noise emmisions have killed the sound most new bikes make but they can still be sleak, leary, shrink wrapped missiles that follow homologation rules.

I think pinning the lack of manuals down to legal reasons is pretty short sighted, It's generally down to two things i'd argue. With the bulk production models, for example the toyota yarris or the ford focus it pretty much just comes down the cost of implementation (Designing and creating facilities to produce the vehicles) not being cost effective when looking at the demand. However this is obviously not the problem with low production sports cars. These tend to throw away the manual for 2 reasons. 1 performance, from an engineering perspective the automatic is objectively better because it can shift faster, is able to utilize more gear ratios and shifts exactly when it needs to. 2 because it limits how mistakes from the driver can destroy the rest of the vehicle which is very important as you start pushing the boundary on performance, it's called the bleeding edge for a reason and controlling that risk is very important.

Let us be honest , -Noise réduction is great -Emission reduction is needed, for young guys here they never lived 40 years ago when it was normal for car to emit black smoke. Then cars use to be noisy from factory . Horrible crazy smell from exhaust and one if breath that for long time will get sick 100% sure. -Automatic shift, this should be standard in Europe, in Europe we have a lot of trafic queue , no one want to be stack in traffic with manual shift for hours to go. Let us face it, decades ago there was less peoples on this poor planet, then less cars, then who cares about emission or consumption or security. nowadays the road are SATURATED with metal boxes on wheels, each weight over 1200kg. Who need a racing car plenty of noise in a busy city?? However for those who have plenty of money to spend in cars, best buy a racing version car modified heavily for racing purpose and rent a circuit and have fun. Public roads are for public !

Eco hippies: We're making a difference!! MEANWHILE in 3rd world countries: Record breaking amounts of pollution being dumped directly into the water, land and subsequently water table and the air with open-air pits ranging from illegal refineries to plastics and chemical waste. When you realize what is going on in the rest of the world, day to day, it makes scapegoating the automobile look absolutely moronic. They go about and try punishing the entire industry and punishing anyone that drives them.... Why? Why hasn't anyone stopped to ask how heinous a 'carbon tax' is? People are going to use just as much fuel as they were before, all it does is punish working people by making the act of just getting by far more expensive. Vote the eco-hippies out of your governments and let's focus on addressing the real pollution problems around the world if we truly want to make a difference. The people in power now have completely lost the plot.

You forgot to mention one thing : the market. Probably 99% of the people now don't care about performances or the sound of their exhaust or anything else you mention, all they care about is convenience and if the car can correct their lack of attention, they want big screens and connectivity. More and more people want cars that could drive them to work while they surf the web. I like cars I can fix and maintain myself, if the engine goes bad I rebuild it, try doing that on a newer car : parts are so expensive, unavailable, unreparable or simply one size over to compensate for wear doesn't exist, that it's simpler or more cost effective to replace sometimes the whole damn car.

Cars were ruined decades ago. Ralph Nader killed the chrome palaces, the hot rods and the funny cars of the USA, killed spoke wheels on sports cars such as Jaguar and MG and they all had to wear rubber bumpers (fenders) from then on. Even country roads got white lines, speed limits and no going for a spin to a country road for a beer with your girlfriend any more. Unbelievable. People in the 70s in Britain used to take the car to the local pub and drive home in third because they didn't know what gear they were in. All over the road! France too, Sunday morning, going home pissed as a fart on vino. Today? No thanks! Touch screens, the little voice telling you to shut the door, all that stuff, the "Ding ding da ding!" alarm for seat belts, lane correction and nothing user-serviceable under the bonnet, just wallet every twelve months if you're lucky. The only "fun" now is supercars that are just a stoopid thing to talk about. The real roads kill them with the first speed bump removing the under-the-nose airdam, they have unusable scary horsepower, one tyre costs more than an ordinary car and the options are all dimbo weight-saving carbon fibre for nothing except a Hell of a lot of dough. That's the only thing with cars today. Modern motoring is transport, that's all. For fun, find something else.

Simple fixes (won't be satisfying to everyone but just bear with me): 1. Petrol Particulate Filter - Speaker to amplify Engine Sounds (you can turn it on or off/up or down if you wanna hear the engine). 2. Co2 Emissions - More aerodynamic, reduce weight, Auxiliary electronics, hybrid engines, biofuels or ethanol, ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) 3. Automatic Gearboxes - (Probably won't happen but....) Your countries making it a requirement to get a manual driver's license and teaching you how to properly drive a manual car (having strict regulations, penalizing you for changing gears a little too early even) So many people just wouldn't qualify for a driver's license 4. Soft Rev Limiter -----nope can't help----- Revving too high in general does reduce engine life anyways 5. Speed Limiters------these do protect you because the car can get easily out of control above a certain speed because .... physics 6. Weight - Of course research is being done for cheap, lightweight materials for vehicles along with systems requiring less materials (less weight) and having similar strength. 7. Manual Handbrakes - You can still drift cars without handbrakes except FWD cars (which you can oversteer) 8. Pedestrian Impact Testing - I mean people can be stupid (yes I'm talking about the people who cross the road while texting/playing video games on their phones), and drivers can be stupid too (for not paying attention or reckless driving) so it's necessary 9. Homologation - most of us can't even afford them anyways :( 10. Intelligent Speed Assistance -------yeah I'm mad too, who even drives below the speed limit?---- That's all :))

I'm fine with everything except the speed assistant limiter. I think we are all capable of not speeding in towns, villages and built up areas. But on the motorway, it's definitely acceptable to drive 10% to 20% above the speed limit to keep traffic moving. Otherwise it'll end up like trucks trying to overtake each other.

Im happy that my 350Z doesn’t have any of this shit but let’s just hope that one day we don’t have to modify our older cars so they would meet the standards 😭
